Jonothan Neelands – Professor of Creative Education | Staff Directory | WBS

Ages 11-15

Inquiry Question:

  • What is it like for a refugee?

  • What can we do?

Workshop Description:

This workshop is based on a poignant drama written by Jonathan Neelands.  With the plight of so many refugees fleeing their homes and uprooting to start new lives, this kind of work is critical for building understanding and empathy. This inquiry allows students of ages 11-15 to discover what it might be like for a refugee to move to a new country. Various perspectives are explored and genuine understanding and empathy results.  Experience a workshop that will give you the tools to bring this timely education to your students.

Your students will be able to:

  1. Develop empathy towards someone with a different point of view

  2. Experience interacting with characters that don’t speak the same language

  3. Practice the process of coming to really understand someone

  4. Engage in the inquiry, discover, then take action

  5. Treat others the way they want to be treated
