Building Empathy and Problem-Solving

Ages 4-7

Inquiry Questions:

Why do some people seem mean? What can we do about it?

Workshop Description:

This engaging workshop, for Kindergarten and Grade 1 teachers, will give you tools to problem-solve with your students guiding them to a win/win solution.  Using a fairy tale as a provocation, teachers experience the inquiry method through drama strategies such as teacher in role, hot seating, generating questions and problem solving with the goal of guiding your students to work collaboratively while embracing another’s point of view. Reflecting on real life, your students discover that finding peaceful solutions through conversation is very powerful and achievable. Teach your students to generate questions, retell and write in role while building empathy for someone that frustrates them. Handout for teachers provided.

Your students will be able to:

1.   Develop empathy towards someone with a different point of view

2.   Learn interviewing skills to gain information

3.   Generate authentic questions, retell and write in role

4.   Work collaboratively to bring about a win/win solution
